Hello Folks

Just read Heinlein:Starship Troopers (again). I want the BF2-mod!
Shouldn't be too difficult, although gamebalance might take a bashing
(shoulder-launched tactical nukes will clean up, I guess).

Can't be done. Maps would be way too small for real Mobile Infantry
(book- version, not the silly movie-version).

Remember, a squad can cover several square miles easily - you'd end up
with a "crowded" map even if you use a 64-map with 4 players on each
side.

But the nukes would be fun... maybe somebody could do a "cold war" mod
with 60s-style weapons like the M60 "Starship" and the Davy Crockett
"nuclear handgrenade" launcher :-)

Yeah, the movie is silly, but in a strangely enjoyable way. I get the
feeling of the instructor winking at us all the time.

The book is a bit fascist, but in the SF-sense, a real masterpiece.

Perhaps the jumps could be limited a bit, like bunny-hopping++. I would
love some major explosion blowing people around, could really be fun
(would probably work fine as AA too, just hit the ground nearby).

To call Heinlein "a bit fascist" is like calling Hitler "a bit of a right
winger". I may be wrong, but he seemed to get worse as he got older (it
must be over 20 years since I last read anything by him) and some of his
last stuff was bordering on deranged.

I agree. I have read most of his books, but Starship Troopers is the
only one I have ever read several times. Many of the later books are
quite disappointing (IMHO).

if you want nukes in a BF game, try the BF1942 mod 'Action Battlefield',
that has nuke det packs, and the JU88 and B17 both have conventional and
nukes. one fun mod.

version 1.150 236MB, then patch 1.151 then patch 1.152

Try it and spot what BF2 borrowed....

There _is_ a new _Starship Troopers_ FPS game out. The demo wasn't very
impressive, unfortunately.

I saw some screenshots, and I looked like it was inspired by the movie.

The book is really impressive, considering how old it is. A complete
doctrine for powered armor. Heinlein invented the genre.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that. It is definitely based on the movie,
not the book.

There was also another squad-based version (also based on the movie)
that came out in 1999 or so.

For many years I thought Heinlein wrote it in the 60's. However, it
seems from the biographical stuff I've seen that he started it in the
40's......before computers, integrated circuits, etc.

One very significant feature of it, for me, is that he doesn't spend
time on the engineering behind the technology so it still works today.
However, the capabilities of the Starship Troopers technology is not
possible now but could be within a foreseeable future. Additionally, I
think I've only found about 3 spots where actual dates are mentioned
that produce anachronisms.

When the movie came out I felt that if you changed all the names and a
few catch phrases no one would have recognized it.

Wikipedia has a fairly enjoyable article on the book:
